Hangover vs Night Shift: What’s the Difference?
While this might seem like a silly question, there are some who experience a lot of similar symptoms between a hangover and night shift, let me explain.
A hangover is a group of symptoms that is typically referred to as occurring after a night of heavy drinking. While many of us have most likely experienced hangovers before, there is always different degrees of severity.
You can have a hangover that ranges from absolutely unbearable to not bad. There are a few causes of hangovers that happen when you consume alcohol. These are mostly all caused directly or indirectly due to alcohol consumption.
Night Shift refers to any shift after the hours of usually 3p-7p and goes into the early morning 3a-7a. We’ll be referring to “nursing night shift”, however this could apply for any job that requires overnight work.
There are a lot of people who work night shift and experience headaches, fatigue, dizziness, upset stomachs and more symptoms. These symptoms are also common among those who are hungover.
While they might not seem related at first, there is one cause that is common among the two; dehydration.
What is Dehydration?
Dehydration occurs when you have less intake than output or your body’s needs. This causes a lack of electrolytes, fluids and other necessary elements for your body to carry on daily functions (source).
Common symptoms of dehydration are as follows:
- Extreme thirst – Need more intake of fluids.
- Less frequent urination – Body trying to conserve as many fluids as possible.
- Dark-colored urine – Body has less fluid to filter out, so the concentration of stuff in the urine is higher.
- Fatigue – Your brain and body need fluids and electrolytes to carry functions.
- Dizziness – Your brain needs glucose and fluids.
- Confusion – Your brain needs glucose and fluids.
Dehydration is common with alcohol for many reasons. Firstly, alcohol innately has some physiologic effects that can prevent adequate fluid consumption or retention. In addition, the conversion of alcohol in organic chemistry requires a lot of water to happen. So, there is a lot of consumption of fluids in general.
Dehydration is common with night shift for many reasons as well. These could be anywhere from literally not drinking enough to not having enough time to drink. You might also just plain forget or your body isn’t used to drinking at night, but you still need it (when you’re active).
What is Liquid IV Hydration Multiplier?
Liquid IV Hydration Multiplier is a non-GMO electrolyte powder mix that helps introduce rehydration into people who are dehydrated. It works similarly to sports drinks however, with significantly increased effects, less sugar, and more vitamins and minerals.
Liquid IV claims that one of their Hydration Multiplier packets equals about 3 bottles of regular water. This can be a huge benefit to people who don’t drink enough water.
Why? Well, if you typically only drink one bottle of water (which is not enough), you’ll be getting the benefit of drinking 3 instead of 1. Effects are easily felt if you are one of the over 200 million Americans that are chronically dehydrated. You will feel more active, energized, experience less headaches and hopefully cure hangovers (we know it’s not a “cure” for a hangover, but it can significantly help you reduce the effects).

Replacing certain electrolytes, such as potassium (K+) or calcium (Ca2+) can help with muscle cramps, aches and even heart issues (although you should talk to a primary care doctor for serious issues).
Liquid IV: What Do Doctors Think?
When it comes to Doctors Reviews on Liquid IV, there is a lot of back and forth. On some ends of the spectrum they claim that it will help with hydration, but not at such a rate that Liquid IV claims. Then, there are some that say it has too much sugar and other ingredients in it. So, in the end there is a lot of debate in Liquid IV reviews by Doctors.
Final Verdict: Does Liquid IV Hydration Multiplier Work?
When it comes the Liquid IV Hydration Multiplier it is designed to combat dehydration. So, does it help you cure hangovers?
Well, cure… sadly no. But, help? YES.
